Fluval 306's used or save for FX6?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
h have never had any problems with my fx5. i have been running it for two years now and i got it used. both the guy that had it efore me, and i used a sand substrate. yes it would pick it up but it was never an issue. it would settle at the bottom of the canister and that was it.

I also run 2 Fluval FX5s on my 120g tank with sand substrate for over 2 years without a issue. I do have a little bit of sand in the filters when I clean them out but it has not caused a problem. The Fluval FX5/FX6 is a solid filter!

Save for a used fx5 if you can find one. I did. Found a guy on Craigslist selling his for $160. I brought him down to $130 and it was in really good shape. Already had Bio and all the attachments for it except a plug for the drainage. I went and bought a plug at Home Depot for $1. There you go. If you find a fx5 for you 125 you could modify it to make a spray bar for it. There are videos of it on YouTube. Looks pretty awesome and distributes the flow throughout the tank.

That plug replacement sounds like just what I need. Can you tell us more about the one that you bought?

I'm running a Marineland C-530 and a Fluval 306 on my 110G. I'm way overstocked and filtration is adequate. The Marineland is a nice large canister with plenty of room for media at a very reasonable price. However, I do love my fluval 306, just feels sturdy.

Here you go. It's actually rubber leg tips for anti skid used for tables. It fits perfectly on there. I searched everywhere for that part replacement on eBay and couldn't find it. Bought a pack of 4 of those anti skid tips for $2. Here's a pic of it.

Also, mine didn't come with the plastic screw that holds the rubber plug on. You don't need it. The replacement from home depot fits on there very snug and won't pop out. Mine has been there for about month and hasn't moved. Hope this helps

I have never tried the fx but I recently bought *the Aquatop uv500 for MY 125 (also running an xp3 a powerhead and an Aqeon H.O.B.) and its makin Me happy ....works very well ,holds a ton of media and has good flow(way more than My rena)...I run it through a spray bar from the side and it keeps everything movin nice. Good price for such a huge unit WITH U.V. ....Can't really tell if the U.V. is adding any noticeable benefits but hey ....its in there so I use it. I am satisfied enough that I would purchase another one if I was setting up another big tank. Only gripe I have is that it doesn't come with much in the way of media...just a couple pads. Good luck with Yer choices.

I have a few FX6. I have read the various people crapping on them, but have had nothing but success. I also like that the intake and output are black...they blend into the background unlike the garish green of Eheims.
