i just picked up a pair of used fluval 403's for free, but theyve been out of use for prolly 2 months with the water still in them, i gave them a good clean, and hooked them up, how do you get the it to start if it doesnt have a prime any suggestions?

The early Fluvals can be a pain to prime. Fill the canister up as much as you can (water should be pushed out when you close the top.) now fill the intake hose completely with the valve closed. (not necessary after the first time because both hoses will be full of water.) Now turn on the pump and open the valves....exhaush first and then intake. You might have to rock the unit back and forth a few times to get all of the air out.
if that dosn't work then the water level in the canister is too low and you'll have to syphon the water from the outlet side.

If you have a pwrhd you can use, after filling the canister as full as possible, you can place it (the pwrhd) at the input end of the filter tube, open all valves, if applicable, turn on the pwhd & let it push the water thru the intake tube, thru the filter & out the out flow hose. Submerge the out flow hose, keep the pwrhd on temporarily, start the fluval, establish your CAN flow, remove pwrhd & ya good to go, yea! Been short cuttin like that since the 02 series. Today, with about a 72"x2 hd run, I still assist my 405 w/ a AC 90 pwrhd, even w/ the prime siphon, to much priming for that long of a run, afraid I'll wear the primer out, so I give it a little extra umph.
