my fluval 404 has 4 boxes, i have carbon and a bio media. how shuld i set it up correctly? right now i just put carbon ontop of biomedia in each box. Am i doing it right? been running it for about 3 months now

I have a Fluval canister and the instructions recommend placing the carbon on the bottom. Personally, I don't think it matters.

Carbon on the bottom will allow it to absorb most of the contaminants before it reaches your bio media. Some of the things that carbon absorbs can kill your bio media on contact. Carbon wont catch everything though so its more of a precautionary kind of thing, but in the Fluvals I have, I also put the carbon on the bottom.

like what?

Chlorine and chloramine can instantly kill bacteria and I read somewhere where activated carbon isn't picky on what it absorb so it would get rid of some of it .. I also thinking of setting up my Fluval 404 and thinking of having from bottom to top .. Two Pre-Filter, Carbon, BioMax or Pre-Filter, Carbon, Two BioMax

I've got mechanical on the bottom (floss), chemical in the middle trays (purigen), and bio on top trays (rings).
