Fluval 404 or Eheim 2213?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmmm. . . Thanks. If that will handle a 55, I think I might just go with the Eheim. The Eheim with a sponge prefilter should be enough for my axies.

I hate it when I can't make up my mind. My original idea was to just go with the Eheim, because I love the design- simple and durable. I keep hearing good & bad about the Fluval, and I just don't know which to go with now. It seems like the people who get a good Fluval love them, but some people get bad ones, and wow are there some bad reviews out there. . . I read around 50 reviews today, and I'd say 30 of them said something about their filter leaking because the filter case leaked. Definitely more than half the reviews mentioned it, anyway. But, of course, people are more likely to complain about problems than they are to mention good things.

I've never heard anything bad about anything eheim and have always heard that they are simply the most reliable and easy to maintain filter you can get. pretty much every review I've read says that and with that I was sold and still am. Eheim is the best for quality material and filtration.

Like I said, I absolutely love the one I have. The only thing I've ever heard bad about Eheim that holds any water in my book is the same thing everyone complains about with every manufacturer- That they don't filter the water they're rated to filter. And I guess I have heard that it can be difficult to get replacement parts because Eheim's US customer service sucks.

Other than that, I've heard that they're impossible to prime, and that they're horrible cheap parts that break (LOL! really?). All of those make me laugh. Mine looks like it could take a dive from a second story window and keep going. And for priming. . . I simply don't understand what the problem is! It took me about 30 seconds to figure out how to get it started and that's it.

Thanks again.

Loving my eheim go for it.

I still think my eheim does its job on my 55 and its rated for 66g. easy to prime, stuff is good quality, there are plenty of parts online, especially on Thatfishplace.com eheims are all around great, and filter the closest to what they are rated for out of any manufacturer. and with their simple cylindrical design have the biggest media capacity for the size i've seen in a canister.

This is stupid.

(from drsfostersmith.com)
eheim 2213: 126 GPH pump output
actual flow, 102 GPH
capacity: 3/4 gallon (about 3 liters)

fluval 405: 340 GPH pump output
actual flow, 225? it doesn't say on the site
capacity: 9 liters

why is there even a debate? triple the volume and at least double the flow. Debating about the 2217 vs 405, or 2213 vs 105 would actually be reasonable.

I have 2 fluval 404s from ebay, they work fine. They are on a 75.

Puffcrusader, you think the 2213 is big enough for 55 gallons? What size tank do you have it on?
55 gallons. it does a good job

I have a 2217 on my 40 gal and wouldn't go any bigger. I guess it all depends on personal preference.

BTW: I, too, think you are comparing a mini cooper to a minivan ...
