Will a Fluval 404 or Rena XP4 be enough filteration for a 75 Gallon? My co-worker wanted me to ask you all this question. He is unable to put a HOB filter on the 75, because he is worried about his 1 1/2 year old going behind the tank. Do you think either or those two would be adequate with a heavy stocked 75?

I would do 2 x XP2 or 2 x XP3, that way one could be cleaned while the bacteria in the other remained in tact. If you only have one filter on a tank that can become an issue if you ever need to do a complete clean out of a filter.

I have an XP1 and XP2 on my 75g and it is fine as is but I want to upgrade the XP1 to another XP2 or even an XP3.

For heavily stocked tanks you usualy want 4 times turnover per hour. So for a 75 that would be 300 GPH and the XP4 does 450 GPH so you would be fine if you went this route. I also agree with polish that having more then one filter makes it easier to clean one while the other is left untouched and it makes it possible to put an intake on either end of the tank.

Rena is the worse filter I have ever owned-total waste of money and is a piece of crap.I clean mine and within a few days the output is less forceful than I pee.I have the xp4.I have a fluval 404 in another tank and its one of the best filters I ever owned

On another note-I would pay someone for a reciept with a recent date for a rena xp4 so i could return mine!

the xp4 is a better quieter filter than the fluval, it does not have as good an actual output flow but from what i have read you dont want a fast flow on a filter full of bio media, the xp4 holds a huge amount of media.

the xp4 only outputs an actual flow of 700 LPH using the standard fittings

I would go with the fluval, it has been around MUCH longer then the xp series filters, hence more time for improvements.

oh great reason, think back my friend the fluval external filters were awful, always full of air and rattling like hell, i had a recent 304 and it still did the same thing, i was so relieved at how quiet the xp4 is and no trapped air.

The cheap 404s are no longer on ebay, if that makes a difference.

I have both the XP4 and the Fluval 405. Both are great filters. The one problem with the XP4 is their micron polishing pad that you load as the last material at the top. It's just to fine and will make you clean the filter every week ot two becaue of noticible reduced flow. I solved that issue by not using their micron pad anymore and just started using a bulk poly pad and cut it to size. I only sevice the XP4 every 2 months and the flow is still good at that time.
