Fluval 404 Problems

I've had my Fluval for maybe 5 years now so I guess it's getting a little old. I put it in storage for 6 months and just pulled it out to use again. It leaks a little and is a lot noisier than I remeber. What do you think is wrong with it? Do I need to replace the impeller or something.

Also what is the Impeller Well Insert?

Take the impeller out and clean it. Also flush out where it goes. Put some vasoline on the rubber and that will help it stop leaking.

I tried that but didnt do a very detailed cleaning? Do i need to get into it with a Q tip or should the general whipe down of where my finger can reach be good enough?

It also doesnt always start working when I plug it in or if it does it does a loud clattering noise. I have to unplug it and then plug it back in a few times to get it to start with out the clattering. Do you know what that means?

are you running it dry?? while it's making the loud clattering noise..
