You can fill all the baskets with biomedia. It depends on if you have other filters, though.

No,this is the only filter im running.

I run quite FEW fLUVAL 404/405'S AND ALL i RUN IN ANY OF THE BASKETS IS CERAMIC RING BIO-MEDIA. (I hate this keyboard !! ) Anyway...the stock foam is all you need for mechanical filtration and chemical filtration is rarely ever needed. Extra bio-capacity however is always a good idea. 'polishing pads' ... 'pre-filter' material ... ECT. is all unnecessary IMO.

not to cut you down wolf but i actually see a tiny difference with the polishpads maybe im just crazy lol.... i run carbon only because i dont have a huge load on my tank and run skimpy on everything... i run ammo lock 2 baskets of bio media a stack of polishers and a phosphate bag every now and then when needed... during spawns when fry feeding is needed

so i have the foam insterts and pre filter what should i add in the other 2 baskets?

You will see a differance with the polishing pads at first but once the bio-media in the baskets establishes it develops a coating thats very effective at removing even the smallest debris from the water. This is also true of the mechanical foam in the first stage. If you wash it too often it won't remove the fine stuff as well.

I run tom's in-line flow meters on all of our canisters and the polishing pads always cause a substantial reduction in flow rate and they also shorten the servace interval IME.

hi everyone im new trying to set up my fluval hehe i got some cool looking fish i want to sure with u all butt need to set up tank first hehe =) have fun :D

How exactly do you have cool fish, but your tank isn't set up yet?

and there is only one 't' in the type of but you were trying to spell.

This is a good question, I have a fluval 304 and never know what to run in it. Right now I have prefilter in the bottom tray, one bag of carbon and one bag of clear max in the middle tray and bio-max in the top tray. Is this a good setup? It seems to work for me, but I am sure I could make it better??
