fluval 405 or fx5 for my 125?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as regular canisters go, it's substantially more than most comparable brands. Fluval 405 is 22w, Rena XP4 is 33w, Eheim 2075 is 16w for example. Like you said though, it's relative. A pond pump or external return pump like that is definitely a lot worse...

FX5 is MORE than Enough for a 125gl IF properly maintained and setup. People seem to think that just because it's larger filter that it doesn't (or shouldn't) have to be taken care of as much. Whne the fact of the matter is, it's a good investment into any aquarist arsenal of equipment and should be maintianed that much more because of the investment, which in turn then become a piece of equipment that will last a very long time!

The FX5 has a built in motherboard and CPU that monitor the pumps power level and maintains the lowest possible wattage achieveable at all times. So Go for the FX5 and feel free to add the 405 or get a used 404, they run just as Good in my opinion and you can typically pick up a used one for 20-50 bucks. I got mine for $20

It's always a good idea to have an extra filter running that is established in case of emergency...

You could also get the 405 and then a Chinese filter off of e-bay..(sunsun, odyssa, etc), and have plenty of filtration, a backup filter, and some extra cash in your pocket.

Really? I had no idea, I wonder what the average rate of power use is...
