Hello! My Fluval 404 has gone to the giant tank in the sky and now I need to buy a new filter tomorrow morning. The city I'm in is small so my options are limited to the Fluval 405, 406 or FX5. What would you all recommend for a 72 gallon tank with large fish in it? I know the FX5 is a bit overkill but my tank might benefit from it. If I can get a decent price, I'm kinda leaning that way unless somebody has some info for me.

Is that the only filter you will be running?
if so i would say go with the fx5 no such thing as over filtrate : ) just more water movement and more filtration whats the big fish?

Right now there is a 6 inch JD, 8 inch Nile Tilapia and a 9 inch Redtail Shovelnose cross. I know........the tank is getting small but for now it is what I have got.

So you will be running only 1 filter? If your are just running 1 I would say go fx5 more then Enough filtration and better to have more filtration then not enough expecially with the fish you got

fx5 is definitely not an overkill for your 72 gallon, i have it for my 75 and i think its just about perfect, to me the fx5 would do fine for any tanks from 75-150 gallon
