In order for the Fluval E series to work properly you need to make sure there is plenty of water flow going over/through the heater.

I'd have to agree. I do have much water flow in the tank that contains my Fluval E heater. I've not had any problems and I see it as a good product. I's purchase another E series. Perhaps, Fluval needs to emphasize the importance of water flow.

So basically, the stupid guard means that you have to point a powerhead straight at it or it doesn't work?
That's really stupid, fluval should've either built a powerhead into it, or ditched the guard.

I have tons of filtration (close to 10x turnover), the flow is all very diffused. I have a HOB and a canister with a spraybar.

I would see if you can take it back.

No offense, but that's what you get for buying what's "new", instead of buying what "works".

Good luck ! :headbang2

How much flow past the heater? How long has your heater been set up?

Yeah, it's just got me really depressed because I wanted this thing to work.
The reason I wanted it is so that I could see clearly if it was working.

My LFS has several on display in various tanks that work just fine. They are the lower wattage ones though.

mine was in a 100 gal tank with an eheim 2229, ac110, and 2 koralia 4's set up in the house during a typical northern california summer. I was shocked at how poorly it performed. Some people swear by them, but I'll stick to other brands after spending 50 bucks on that heater
