I would just run them stock.
I had prefilter sponges on some of my ac110 filters and the flow was really slowed down to a trickle and the filter blocks wern't getting dirty, that makes me feel like there not working.

I don't think eheims and FX5's are over prone to sand problems.

I would go stock and see if you have a problem first before resorting to this.
IMHO

Infact the guy I bought my used FX5 from used it to drain his salt reef and purposly tried to vacuum up the sand. It was a mess, but after cleaning it out there was no damage that I can tell.

i just went through all this $hit because sand *ucked up my Eheim. i wouldn't go to all this trouble for nothing

sorry to hear that.
I would make you intake much larger then to try to get more flow.
imho

this is what I use, but I didn't have a choice my filter didn't come with any in or out lines:

good luck

If you use a sponge on the intake, especially of its a higher PPI than the sponges in the filter, its just going to clog MUCH quicker. Example, a sponge on the intake which measures 6" tall about 3" wide. thats a cross section surface area of 28.26" compaired to the 296 sq inch area inside the Fx5.

The enclosed impeller type can be a better pick when dealing with sand. Although, it can be a worse pick too. Its good, because there is no tolerences between the ends of the blades and the impeller housing to wear out due to the sand such as open impellers which will reduce the flow rate. On the other hand, I have heard of one of two instances of the impeller clogging with sand. There could be more contributing factors to this though.

Was it your Fx5 that was filled with sand when you got it? That was awful.

yah im tired of all this S hitty sand Bull$hit, im gonna buy 3M sand today and switch out my sticky sand/powder crap. i think its marine sand or something i never really asked. the owner of the store was just like yah... our rays like it...so i got it and hate it.

once my old sand is replaced with good sand ill chuck my sponges and start up my FX5 once and for all!

It's a good idea but you could have just stuck the weighted bottom of the sponge on the inlet and had it setting closer to the bottom of the tank. and you wouldn't have had to use all the extra stuff. you might as well while you're at it take your FX5 apart and take out your foam blocks and replace them with bio. this filter won't be able to get anything up into it I.E. fish poo. Now that the prefilter on and so fine.
