If you have a bare bottom, you can use the extra attachment to pump the old water into the toilet or outside (or however you get rid of your dirty water.) The only benefit to that is faster draining of the tank.

That's what I was thinking.....but I use the fill and drain at the same time method! I'm barebottom too so this is impractical. It would drain faster then I can fill (assuming). A 30% WC is roughly half of my bathtub hence a full tub by draining and filling simultaneously is still 30%. This process also stirs any dead zones that my spray bars might miss. It's a good idea though if you drain then fill....

Great Idea I am going to give this a try! But i am still kinda worried cause I was planning on going with sand in some of my tanks I wonder if it would still work if you cut up some fine sponges and placed them in the vacumkes tube ? so it would actually be filtered even more and possibly making the FX5's filter pads last longer.

Using this method with a sand substrate is very risky and could be a very costly mistake in IMO. I personally don't think I have ever successfully clean my tank without sucking up atleast a little bit of sand. My fish put enough sand in my tank without me adding to it. For me hanging a hose outside to do my water changes is good enough..

Agree, besides you don't really have to vac to get the stuff out of sand. They are mostly gathered on top and not inside.
