Fluval FX5 Maintenance?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive had my fx5 for a couple years now and have never replaced the sponges once. I just rinse them every month or so. I also just rinse the ceramic tubes in the middle of each basket when i rinse the sponges. All done in tank water. Replacing everything just starts by biological filtration over again.

lol, so how long can i leave the other media in their?
Carbon every month get's changed
Filter Foam get rinsed every month
Bio max gets rinsed every month
Clear Max gets rinsed every month

...I think that is right...but when do i completely get rid of each media then replace them?
Like I said, you don't. Bio-max, as well as any coarse mechanical media (including all sponges except polishing pads) stays in there permanently, and only needs to be rinsed out regularly.

I use the blue cut to size furnace filter stuff for my mechanical in the outer ring if the basket. Rinse em once a month and replace when they start falling apart. I also rinse the bucket portion itself at the same time. I just found an awesome sale on the 3 pack of the round blue fluval filters for 3 bucks a box , so I started using them on top of the first stage as well.

I never use any type of chemical media(ie carbon) I also caution against using the Fluval polishing pads....they clog waaayyy too easy and I almost lost an entire tnk of fish due to that.

+1

ok play it safe no polishing pads, so rinsing all the media every month is the best way for maintenance? Never needing to change it?....thanks.

You should have enough media with sand and live rock so not to worry about cleaning out the media in your filters including everything, if your filter is your main source for retaining ben. bac. you need more surface area anyway
