If you were to get a new filter, would you get the fx4 for 235 or the 2217 for 140? I have a jebo canister for my 90, but it doesn't seem like the bio is enough on it. I do plan on getting a bigger tank in a year or two as well. What do you guys think
If your water parameter are at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and some nitrates, you have enough bio media. Beneficial bacteria grows all over the tank, the substrate, in the sponges of filters, etc. Bio media simply provides a large surface area for bacteria to grow on.
That being said, I think you'd be happy with either filter, but I'd lean toward an FX5 myself.
I feel that I need more bio. My wide bars silver dollars are starting to get big and they're extremely messy eaters. I know for a fact that I'm going to get another filter since my jebo was kind of acting up on me and I want one just for a backup. I'm just looking into which one
I have 2 2217 on my 125 that keep my tank crystal clear even with a huge bioload 10 clown loaches and 5 datnoids (befor the flaming starts chill everyone it's a growout tank and the largest fish in thier is barley over 4.5inch) the 2217 do a very nice job however I would hesitate on putting them on anything larger then a 180 possibly a 220 but that seems like pushing it. My recommendation is get the fx5 I have seen them single handedly handle 300+ gallon tanks. Remember with filtration more is better however if yor next upgrade is going to have a sump you might want to save yor money for that rather then spend it on a canister you may not need.

OK, if you are going for the max amount of flow and media, then FX5 is in a completely different league that the 2217. The eheim that compares to the FX5 is a 2260 or 2262. I would go FX5, but eheim classics are nice filters. You really won't dislike either one, I just think the FX5 is more bang for your buck.
