Your trying to compare apples to oranges.
A single tray on an FX5 holds close to the same amount of media as the entire 2217.
Flow rates, well, just look at the numbers.
On your bio media needs vs. what you think you need.
You already got that answered.
Seems your mind is made up and don`t want to be confused by facts.
I get it, you want someone to tell you it`s alright to get that FX5 you are lusting after.
OK. Here it is.
Go get it.
Are you kidding when you said that a single basket of fx5 holds the same amount of media of the entire 2217?.
Its incredible how same people make statement with out facts, misleading others.
Fx5 holds 6 liters of media, 2 on each tray, 3 trays in total.
2217 holds 6 liters of media.

You tell them Rudy1964. Also you can not compare the two. The Eheim is by far a more superior canister. But if you have the extra money I would get the bigger Eheim Classic series 2260 or 2262.

No there isn't. It's all full of media. ~12 litres of sponges and 5.9 litres of bio media is more than you will ever need unless you are using your canister filter to process sewerage.

Hagen did not make very efficient use of the space. They could have done much better.

The 2217 has a total canister volume of 6 liters. This does not mean you will have 6 liters of bio media inside it. You may only get 3-4 liters.

You tell them Rudy1964.
Misinformation

If you're directly comparing them then the FX5 is the better filter, but just like comparing the FX5 and Eheim 2260/2262, you have to take price into account. For the price of one FX5 with media you could get two Eheim 2217 with media. If you're dead set on spending $250-300, I would go with two 2217s. You get two intakes, extra reliability, and more media space.

Misinformation
People like your self keep comparing fx5 with almost every eheim model 2262/2260/2080/2217, there is a lot more models to compare if you want.
As for misinformation, i said it clear 2217 holds 6 liters of media, fluval fx5 almost 6 liters, it is true that you won't fill 2217 with bio, but for someone to say that one tray of fx5 fills the entire 2217, thats no true.
Now you keep pushing your fx5, and i'm glad you like it; and think its the best thing ever made, but you have to be honest and true when you make statement not knowing what you have, what i mean, in another tread comparing fx5 with 2262 you said fx5 holds 10 litres of biomedia, if you get 2 fx5 thats 20 at 1200gph, i don't know where did you get that.
The classics been around for a very long time, if i were to compare them with the fluval i will compare them with the 3 series, but were are those filters today, then came the pros, we can compare them with the 4 series, was the verdict on that, and if you want to compare the fx5 with eheim maybe with the 2080 will be a much fair battle.
The classic are on a league of their own, specially the 3 big ones, the fact that you can interchange pumps, hold a lot of media, no other canister has that.

Decided to go with the 2217. Eheim's rep was just too much to pass upon. And ignore Kaiser. The guy obviously has some ego issues and likes to walk around thinking hes better than everybody else

Haha, like I said, you'll be happy with either one. Eheims are great, I also love my FX5. I own both brands, so doesn't really matter to me.

Pretty sure you will be happy with your choice.

You guys are absolutely right, I goofed the capacity comparison by allot.
Sorry to throw out bad info, just not sure what I was thinking.
