that is just to maintain the gph rating of the filter. it will function properly with longer hoses but the gph will decrease.

correct, but it is always good practice to install things per manufactures specs. fluval put alot of work into this filter. its kinda their baby so to speak, so im sure theres a better reason than just gph

just keep in mind that fluval states that each hose must NOT exceed 9.8' or 3meters. and also the combined length of both intake and discharge lines are NOT to exceed 16.4' or 5meters
