I just purchased a used 210 gallon fish tank, which came with a Fluval FX5. It was used for freshwater. However, I want to use it for a saltwater setup. Could someone please tell me if I could use this Fluval FX 5 (canister filter) with a protein skimmer (which you would recommend), and a UV sterilizer (which you would recommend)? Also could you tell me how to do it?

you could run the sterilizer on the return from the fx5 and i assume this wont be a sump system so get a big hang on skimmer look on drfostersmith.com get a good deal there or marine depot.com

It would depend on what you wanted to keep. If it were fish only, I say yes. Fish with live rock, you could run the canister, but with a good skimmer you probably wouldn't need it. Same thing with soft corals. With stony corals, I would not run the canister at all, because the goal here would be to keep nitrates as low as possible. In this tank, it would be live rock, the best skimmer I could find, MH lighting, calcium reactor, and religious water changes. :D I wouldn't bother with UV on a saltwater tank.

As it's for saltwater use, and you have a protein skimmer, you would be better ditching the idea of u.v sterilization and opting instead for an ozoniser with a redox controller, ozone is far more efficient than u.v.

Thanks guys, you are the best. I was getting so much different information from the employees at the local fish stores where I go. All I received was mass confusion and a severe case nerves. I paid $750 for the tank, light fixture, glass top, a Fluval FX 5, a lot of fake rocks, gravel, and an iron stand stand. Did I make a mistake?
