Umm sponges usually do not need replacement, just a quick rinse(in aquarium water).

Does not need to be in aquarium water. Tap water will work fine. You don't need to care about any small amounts of bacteria on the sponges. Thats what bio media is for.

Good point but what about all sponge filters?
I have just always been used to rinsing all of my media in aquarium water.. can never be too safe.
 
I rinse off my Eheim 2213's pre-filter (zoo-med sponge) in tap water then squeeze it out and plop it back in my tank. Once it's been there for a few minutes, and I am done with the water change, I put it back on and turn on the filter.
