My dad just ordered a 180 gallon tank from a lfs and when he ordered it. It came with a Fluval FX5 and is that filter enough for a 180 gallon tank by its self?

I don't think so, you are going to want to run something else along with it.

Depends on what you are going to put in it. If ya go with a heavily planted tank with a monster shoal of Cardinal tetras, I would say yes it is enough. If ya run a tank with a dozen Red belly piranhas, then it probably wont do the job. To me though it is better to have to much filtration then just enough. I also like to go with multiple filters, just in case one should go down.

what you gonna put in it?

ive got a fx5 on my 180g and it works great!

1x Cichla temensis, 1x tsn, 1x rtc x tsn, silver aro, florida gar.

Biggest is 15" smallest is about 13"

I do not have the silver aro yet I am getting it on Sunday. Don't know the exact size.

I would go with more filtration, preferably a w/d sump combo.

So I am wondering why you would need any more than 1 on a 180.

always good to have a backup in case of one failing and more bio filtration the better.......Hell i have 2 rena xp3's and an eheim 2028 pro2 and a powerhead and bubblemaker on my 125!!!!!!:WHOA:

remember 10 times flow through rate filtration is optimal on huge tanks unless you have a huge sump...........I think!!!......p.s. did i word that right!!!!??
