From what I've read 1cubic foot of pot scrubbers has close to 400 square feet of surface area.

There are better options available but not for the price.

I'm not looking for "the best" just something good, that's inexpensive and has longevity.

You'll find alot of differing opinions on the subject.

Yes. They acid wash it though, which is easy enough to do if you're worried about it.

i run pond matrix as well. its amazing! i do two baskets of it, and top basket with a few bio balls, to hold the floss off the grating.
