What is everyone using in their fx6? Seems like thered hardly any bio in them so i wa thinking about doing the while center section in bioballs. But i dont know

I left all the sponges in the unit removed everything else and filled the rest with matrix

The only downside of my FX6 is it doesn't catch fine particles in the water column

What if i fulled the center area with matrix and then on thr top layer i use polyfill for fine filtration?

That i wouldn't mind doing as ling as the matrix lasts awhile

I never use sponges that come with it. I always use poly fill. Cheap, easy. For $5 at walmart i get enough to last a year per filter with HEAVY waste load and requent changes. Bottom 2 trays media and top tray polly fill. Change out poly fill monthly. Throw away then put in new. Sometimes i clean media by using tank water in a bucket as not to kill good bacteria or when feeling lazy just hose it off and neglect water change that week. Everyone has their own technique. Majority my tanks are large central americans and tanks have drift wood and large lava rocks ,etc so it isnt as colossal if i kill bacteria in filter because much in decorations but again never do water change at same time as thorough filter cleaning except when i use tank water to clean canister filter.

I dont have heavy waste. I have a 75g with 2 small cichla. 3.5-4" i like the idea of 2 bio trays and the top one packed with polyfill. Open up the filter wveryother month and switch is out.

My concern now if the matrix now is it like ceramic rings? Or doedoes it have to be changed out every so often?

So i nust made an order. Im keeping the side foam the same. Bottom basket will have the oem stock black pad with ceramics. Middle basket will be full of matrix and 3rd top basket will have polishing pads. Ill try that out and see how it works
