I know there are a few other threads on here about the Fluval G series, but nothing within the last 12 months...
I gather that most people on here (except you, Yuki!) seem to bash the Fluval G Series filters primarily based on cost relative to bioload capability. While I will admit that the cost is high for the amount of filter, I also could not resist buying one given the opportunity. I had hands on experience installing and maintaining for several months a G3 that I did not own. The thing is SO QUIET and SO EASY to service that I immediately loved it.
I agree that the cost is high for the bioload, but the silence and ease of service make the difference for me. I have DIY sumps and traditional HOB and in tank filters, and I don't mind doing the work when appropriate, but the G series means that at least one of my setups will be quick and easy to maintain. I just started a new job, and this purchase was my splurge in celebration. I went with the larger G6, just to have as much flexibility in the future, but for the time being it will be going on my 60 gallon community tank, which I will be moving my son's nursery before he is born
. I can't wait for it to be cycled (currently running in tandem with my old Penguin 400) so I silence the chug of the old filter! I justified the purchase to my wife based on noise, and as soon as I put it on she said "there is just more stuff, and it makes the same amount of noise". So I unplugged the HOB for a minute... She wants me to buy one for another tank in my living room!
To everyone who has ever hated on the Fluval G Series filters, you are just upset that you can't afford them for your gallonage! Stop trying to compare them to other canisters or other styles of filters for that matter, the Fluval Gs have features that no other unit has, and those features certainly do have their place. The flow, temperature, and conductivity logs are also cool, if you are a data geek.
