I wouldn't even consider it. I don't like cartridges and electronics on filters. The cartridges will certainly limit the capacity and the electronics are a problem waiting to happen.

What he said. Not to mention the high price and low flow rates.

PFK article about the Fluval G

"When asked about the comparatively low flow rates for the units, a Hagen spokesman explained that the Hydrotech Monitor allowed the units to be run at optimum efficiency by warning the user when flow rates had dropped, and that cartridges could be cleaned or replaced so quickly and easily that they may run as efficiently as competitors models with faster initial flow rates."

In other words, keep rinsing your filter cartridge all the time because we made it easy to do, and the fluval G will run as efficiently as your other filters do when they're clogged with fish crap. Yup, big step forward there.

Couldn't they have just made the fx5 shiny?

I am buying like 15 of these puppies maybe more because that's the amount of these state of the art filters I would need to replace my simple, cheap in comparison and efficient filration that I have maintaing my 4500L of Monster Fish Tanks.
Hagen has really hit the spot with these babies and I am totally sold on this convoluted piece of water management equipment.
Hagen have given me what I really wanted in an aquarium filter
