Fluval LED plant light=INSANE! PIC HEAVY!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right on. Was just looking for those values because I've read good things about the Odyssea fixtures as well, so wanted to see if they stack up. They're a lot less coin too, but I'm sure there are other variables involved, just want to have the knowledge to investigate as many of those variables as I can.
Always try to do apples to apples when I can...

Edit: For some reason I had it in my head that the Odyssea were LEDs as well, but they're T5HO, so I guess its not apples to apples after all... My mistake there...

Yea the oddeysa may have blue night time leds? Either way I'm in love with this light and will update progress on growth!

Ok I had to go big and in doing I saved 130$ opposed to the fluval led. 2x 65watt square pin florescent utility lights made for outdoor. Temp is 6500k and growth has picked up heavily! Just have to get the c02 and fert adjustment right. Each light 44$ @ my lhs, just had to do some wiring and ditch light sensor.

My phone seems to dull the whiteness of the light and make it tanish but its bright, unfortunately my low light plants aren't happy but my high light plants are living the life. May need to rescape and go all med/highs

My only gripe with LED's is that i honestly wonder how long their EFFECTIVE lighting effects will last...

In case that sounds confusing what i mean is; with for example, T5 bulbs, they say you should replace them every year, since the output intensity will get lower over time, so i wonder, how long do the LEDs effectively work?

I mean i see a lot of these brands state 50,000 hours, which is fair, and while they may still "work" after 50,000 hours, what i'm curious about is, will they really be putting out the same light intensity over all 50,000 hours of use, or will the lighting power be reduced by say half in less than that time?

Coz i know a lot of the older LED systems were basically like that when they first came out... all of them stated that they would last 50,000 hours, but most of them according to the few store owners i talked to, said that after 1 - 2 years, their LED fixtures just didn't cut it any more and some of them the lighting intensity drop quite significantly after the first year...

So again, while i am not dismissing LED fixtures, since they have been improved i'm sure... i'm still curious to know realistically how long they will work for high demand planted tanks...

Homer look a few post up, I switched to 2x 65watt 6500k outdoor florescent flood lights, something like 4250lumen a pop, this is what the bulb looks like

This is the light, very good reflector. Looks great for the price imo

And its made for outdoor so it can easily handle aquariums.

I had to take some of my low lights plants out because they could handle it and bba seemed to take over the low light plants but my high lights like my lace leaf and reds are going great!

I just couldn't bare spending 240$ on a light for a 40b so 90$ later w/ 3x the lumens I saved 150$!

Yes I considered many options but imo nothing beats the price of lights from lhs. It may not look fancy but its all weather, ul/cul listed and doesn't get that hot.

Some of those other fixtures I just don't trust, either the ballast gives way, bulbs burn out like crazy, fire or other finicky instances. I've only heard good things about the more expensive brands. That led me to go my own route and it is working rather nicely I might add.

That's true and kind of the reason I'm a bit skeptical about trying the cheaper brand but I've heard good things and read a few reviews saying they had them working great for years so $60 isn't a bad investment if things work well. At the moment I have this ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1382557556.443063.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1382557588.358551.jpg. It's ghetto but does the job for now. I made it with a lamp and stuff I found around the house. It works though my Anubis is still alive and I just added val.
