Fluval or Aquatop

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
FX5 more realistically pushes like 550-600gph. :)

I don't think there's any "right" answer here. You're just going to have to make a decision.

+1

The pump itself with no head, no media pushes 950, like clockwork said the can itself with sponges and media realistically pushes 500-600gph, id think the aquatop would lose even more gph because the fx5 pump is better. You dont really know unless you test yourself! I believe most filter ratings are based on media capacity rather then gph.

Either way I've heard decent things about both, and each are pretty popular on mfk, if you have the money get the fx5, that way if you upgrade to a bigger tank you have a big filter.

Thank you MTBjake. Is there a reason why? The two Aquatops together are rated to push 1050 gph while the FX5 only pushes 925 gph.

The 2 Aquatops together are rated higher but I've heard quite a few complaints about them(even though personally I've had no issues) and if one doesn't work for too long you'll be out a filter. The fx5 seems to have an almost cult following and they are built more modular with readily available parts so down the line replacing components isn't such a hassle.

F1 VET I think you may have just sold me. Having the larger filter for upgrades is something that I haven't considered. There are only 2 things that I worry about now. One is the micro-bubble problem that some FX5s seem to have and the other is that I don't know how noisy the FX5 is. I've heard the aquatops run extremely quiet.

I think you should do an fx5 for a tank that size but also consider a aqueon hob. For the price u can run 2 of them at 400gph with the fx5. So you would be puching serious water

I plan on breaking down all of my smaller tanks and moving my HOBs over for the added filtration until I can afford to get another canister.

I run 2 FX5s on my 120g and they are not loud at all.I would pick up the FX5 and use a HOB with it for now till you have enough money to get another FX5.
