Fluval spec V

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What is it about puffers that makes them more challenging? Sensitive and tough to get on pellets? Honestly I could easily do a spec and a standard five gallon, it's just whether or not it is worth my time to put the Betta in a five to free up the spec, depending on what interesting things I could put in there.

For me it was the inconvenience of me having to breed and raise snails and shrimp for them. Then having to go outside to pick a few for them. When I got them to eat pellets they were easier, but still needed a snail once in a while to keep there teeth manicured. I don't find them to be more sensitive than most fish. They just aren't as easy as a fish like a betta. I'd get pea puffers because I find bettas pretty boring. Very easy in terms of care, but not nearly as personable as a puffer. If you ever had pea puffers or any puffer for that matter. You can see how personable and intelligent they can be.

You found it hard to breed snails... You need to tell me exactly what you did to make them not breed quick enough...
Lol. Not hard. I just stuck a bunch of ramshorn snails in my planted tank outside. It was just the inconvenience of it. First having to go to the lfs to get some ramshorn (they can't get at the MTS's) Then having to raise and gather snails and shrimps vs. opening a bottle of pellets. Now I don't have any pea puffers and they have taken over...

[/ QUOTE]
I've never kept pea puffers but i know they're not common. With that in mind, they're probably not the easiest to keep alive lol.
I've never kept bettas with shrimp but I've kept them with other fish and even in a ten gallon, they're typically not fond of tank mates. Bettas are awesome though. They're great little fish.
agree with you ;)

If only the issue of parasites didn't exist... I'd be set for snails for life. My brother works at PetSmart, they're everywhere. I used to (stupidly) put puffers in our community tank, so I'm already in love with them. Finding a freshwater species that could tolerate my lack of experience is an attractive prospect. If I were to allow a snail population to flourish in the tank, would that be suitable, or would they simply kill all of them off?

Pea puffers would definitely not allow a dense enough population to exist in your tank. As stated before raising your own snails and shrimp is pretty easy. I found it rewarding enough to raise shrimps and snails in a planted tank and bucket outside for them. When they get to adult size they look and act pretty awesome! Especially in a Co2 planted setup. But just putting a betta in your tank and having a little container of betta pellets is much easier.
