I think it really depends on which specific filters you are comparing.

for example, the Fluval 04 series have a not so hot reputation out there compared to the Rena XP3 and the Eheims, BUT the Fluval FX5 has an excellent reputation.

on the other hand, the Rena XP4's have not so good rep.

I think that if you go with either a fluval FX5 or a Rena XP3 you can't go wrong.

however, other filters from either brand? buyer beware..

I have 2 rena xp3 so far they have been great. However i can't comment on fluval since i have never owned one. I will be trying a fx5 when i set up my 180.:headbang2

I have double fx5s plumbed into my 450 system,Its like the friggin amazon with all the current i get from these two.I would like to next try a rena xp3.

A few years ago, I purchased a 404 and like most of the "fun" aquarium equipment that I purchase, I sat around for a few evenings studying the fit, function, etc., contemplating how best to use it. I thought that the fit of the 404's internal filter components was unbelievably sloppy and frankly, I did not see how significant bypass could be avoided. I returned the 404. After some online analysis, I moved on to the Rena XP3 and have never looked back. I agree that most of the accessory plasticware is junk (spraybar is ok, though) and the tubing was very noncompliant. I replaced the tubing with, oddly enough, 404 corrugated tubing and constructed intake stems from epoxy carbon fiber tubing. The design of XP's internal components is simple and logical. The fit s tight and bypass appears be defeated. I have twin XP3s on a 150 gallon tank that have been operating continuously for over three years without fail. The impeller housing o rings are disintegrating (I will soon replace) and these things keep humming.

Fluval makes better filters in terms of large tanks, i.e. the FX5 - but for ease of use and cleaning I prefer Rena's on smaller tanks.

In other words, if I'm getting a filter for a tank over 150 gallons I go with Fluval, anything under Rena - Fluval's rings like to leak a lot, and I'm already noticing with my FX5 that the output gets clogged constantly.
