is a fluval 304 ok for a 55 freshwater tank? im getting it for free is to ok to put it in to an up and running tank right away? and what is the best media for it in this size tank?

i think it shude be okay
im running a fluval 404 on my 55
i jus have a carbon bag, ceramic rings and js some cotton in it o.O
ehh keeps the water pretty clean

The filter should be fine for the size of the tank , depending on the amount of fish and Bio - load of them .

But sticking it on the tank straight away , you would still have to cycle the filter first . If you have a filter on the tank now you could just ever swop the media over from your current filter or leave it on running next the new one for a couple of weeks - a month to let the new one cycle/ seed fully .

Media , i would IMO would swop you old media over from your old filter or use some normal Filter pads/ sponges along with some Scubbies or maybe just fill it to the top with scubbies .

but my the filter in the tank right now is a hob the new is a canister

Ok just let the new filter run for a few weeks so it can cycle/ seed while your current 1 is still running . After about a month ( maybe a little less or a little longer ) the new filter should be ok to run on its own .

so set up the new filter and let it run awith the hob they in around a months time it is safe to take out the hob right? and how long till the new filter needs media change? very month 2 6 any help is great. thanks MFK's

Personally i wouldnt change the media in any filter unless its completly clogged up and wont rinse clean its self , and dont replace all the media all at once only 1 sponge at a time so you dont get rid of all the good Bac' out of the filter .

im geting the filter of free from my dad it was in a salt water tank so he got rid of the media and is shipping it to me so idk.
