I see...But when I open up my fluval the top basket has a lid which has a small raised ring protruding from the top which mates up with the return pump on the motor housing,so wouldnt this cause the flow of water to be directed through the media baskets. The motor housing will not close on to the media basket properly unless they are mated exactly and the fit seems somewhat snug.I have never had the chance to use an ehiem so I am not quit sure how they ensure the flow through the media.

Try placing a plastic wrap on the raised ring and you will still find out that a lot of water will still come out from the sides. That is water circumventing the media basket and is unfiltered water.

Huh...no kiddin, all is not what it seems.

I have 2 -304's and have never had a problem other than the priming thing which I learned to avoid by keeping the filter below water level an dnot running dry during water changes..Doh !

Yup , thats exactly what i do and i never have any problems . You can turn them off just as long as the intake is below water and make sure the water level is way above the intake when turning on and you should be fine.

The fluval 204 would be perfect for a 30 gallon aquarium. I'm in the aquarium business and have never seen any problems with fluval as long as you change and clean the filter media as with any other filter. Goodluck

well, the thing is i already have a penguin 350 on the 30 along with a penguin 100 along with a penguin 660r sponge filter..... i really want the best filter for the 30 that would cost just about $100... i heard fluval canisters were nice so i thought i should get it... if fluvuals arent the best, what is the best filter?

I have a 404 on a 100 gallon and love it. I was previously running the fluval 403 on the heavily populated pleco tank. Both are great filters. Too big for a 30 gallon. Some of you mentioned reducing the flow. Did you guys add a gate valve to the ouput hose? Someone on another thread complained that his 404 leaked when the power went off. Has this happened to anyone? I searched on the net and it has happened to a number of people. Just curious if there is a design flaw with the new 04 series. I am still partial to the Fluvals.
