Flying Foxs vs. Chinease algea eaters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on type of fish they are in with. My community rank uses Oto cats and they work very well, always busy.

otos are awsome cleaners and plant safe. I keep them in my planted tanks at work and they are spotless. as long as your fish arent big enough to get an oto in its mouth. an oto can do some serious damage on a fish's mouth.

But why would someone pick CAEs as their choice for algae eaters? Juvies are fine but adults are not. You'll have a hard time catching these critters.;) SAEs are good at consuming black brush algae.

Fill me in,Ive never owned a CAE but I have one now in my SA tank that was given to me (dumped on me?)

I am not aware of what happens as they age.Do they get lazy?If thats not it than I have a hunch what your talking about......my CAE really tries hard to catch my smaller fish....I dunno if he just wants to give them a cleaning or what, but he really acts like hed love to clean their bones.

One word for small fish(not CAE): bullying.;) Four words for big fish(not CAE): Sucked off slime coat.:)

As they mature, they get more aggressive. They have a tendency to suck your fish's slime coat which is annoying and will result to stress thus allowing the fish to become susceptible to diseases. IMO, I prefer to recommend placing them in a tank by themselves. They are just pests when they reach maturity. Any slow-moving fish especially goldfish gets sucked by the CAE off its slime coat. Small fish are chased endlessly. I had those before and they were terrorizing all my fish.

Some idiots would suggest them to me but I scoffed at their claim that CAEs eat algae quite well and will not grow big. Not grow big is just a claim. They can reach 25 cm and at this size, they do not fit most tanks. Neither are they for community tanks anyway. As for consuming algae, juvies do but adults?
