I wouldn't attempt putting any tank on a stand that has more than a piece of paper to a credit card worth of gap between the tank and stand surface... JMO though...

I guess technically the foam could compress enought o take up some gaps but I don't think that it's wise being that the foam board needs time to compress. It's not instant.

I have half inch insulation foam under my tanks. It hardly compresses but it does allow the tanks to level off to a point that would otherwise be unachievable. It also provides a bit of insulation under the tank for heating purposes. It sounds silly but believe it or not I have noticed about a $30 difference in the electric bill since adding it under all my tanks.

NICE! Gotta love that!

I want to put foam under my 350 gallon tenecor i bought that is 96x36

That's 3456 square inches to hold around 3000 pounds of water... less than 1 pound per square inch so i doubt the foam is going to have much of a problem.

but what is the exact name of the foam i need to get, is it called "insulation foam"?

I have construction grade that came with my Tank (used off of CL) but I tink that most use Polystyrene Sheets. The 3/4" 4' x 8' is $8 at Home Depot. most likely around the same price at the other stores as well. they have it in 1" and 2 or 3" as well.

:iagree: i was just wondering why i see everyone on here saying you almost have to put foam under tanks if the stands are built right and flat i dont see the need and since it doesnt seem to compress much and takes awhile to compress very little insulating is a whole other story

Just use sheet foam made for insulating houses. You may want to check out some of the discus forums using insulating foam is quite common and people have similar expirences as I do with using it. Also as a note it is widely believed that rimless tanks have to sit on some sort of foam or the bottom may become highly prone to cracking and/or leaking.

ADA won't honor their warranty unless the tank you buy is on their "Garden Mat" which is actually.... Rubber covered foam, so that should tell you something.

The wood we use in our stands isn't flat and any imperfection can mean a stress point on the acrylic whereas with foam if a piece was sticking up it would get compacted
