Focus in the hobby - it's easy to lose it.

Hello; It is a hobby not an obsession, at least for me. I have had the interest wax and wane over the decades. Work and other things have had an impact. I have been down to one small tank a few times and numerous tanks at other times. Now that I have made it to retirement and have a place of my own, I too have only three tanks running.

I have four empty tanks in the basement with some vague plan to set them up. I can do whatever I want and do not get around to it. As I can do anything I want, three tanks must be it right now. Having a large number of tanks can be a chore but also rewarding. Having one or a few tanks can be easier on the wallet and also rewarding.

It's a hobby, do it any way you like, except for those living in someone else's place. Renters, those living with mom and dad and those who are married will likely have to cut a deal.

Agreed on the spousal deal cutting...... :)

Having been in the hobby for 35 yrs the # of tanks has risen and fallen depending on our location (job transfers every few years) as the next house did not always accommodate multiple tanks.

Our last deal was that I get a small fish room in the basement rather than scatter tanks around the house. It's just large enough to house a 180g, two 75g, and a laundry sink for water changes etc. Nothing fancy, but a great place to spend time.

O

When I was working 2 jobs, and married, I had 5 tanks and a pond.
Now that I am semi-retired, and divorced, I have 20 tanks, 2 indoor pool/ponds, 2 outdoor ponds, and take my vacation trips to where my fish come from (Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica), to snorkel and scuba dive in it.
The hobby started for me in the 1950s, and has never been more satisfying, its all attitude and simply living the life.

It's not so much time, which I don't have by the way. Its not time.... it's focus... focus... focus is key.

I can't focus on more than three tanks, therefore, three tanks shall I have instead of 8 or 10.

I don't lose focus with multiple tanks. Its easy to get carried away though with more and more tanks been there done that. Normally I would have several tanks because of different fish that can't be kept together. Now Ive reduced down to just 2 tanks my two biggest. I through all the fish that could be together in two tanks. I reduced the number of tanks to cut down on my electricity expense it was getting ridiculous.

I am I the process of cutting back do to expenses as well ,combining tanks ect. I recently did test with the $3.50 LED bulbs at home depot and put 1 bulb in a clamp light on my 40g breeder. The plants are growing faster than before. Going to start it o my 125g this week to test penetration and spread.

To me this will aid in my focus as lower operating leads to further investment hopefully in even lower cost!

Yup, that's another reason for the focus. Electrical bills!!
