At that size, guppies and rosy reds are preferred. Minnows and large rosy reds are still preferable to goldfish even when it gets big enough to eat goldfish.
Not worth it just buy them.. You can never really produce the numbers needed in an economical manner.. Trust me I know this well.... I used to raise Live-bearers of all types regularly for both conservation, strain fixing and sometimes feeding. It is just not practical for feeders at all to do it on ones own...
Many seem to think Live-bearers means somehow more fry than egglayers or that it is somehow easier. It is in fact not the case. Live-bearing fish spend great amounts of energy on FEW fry... NOT MANY... Egglayers are a better deal but much more complicated to raise and produce. Either way you are spending 5 to 6 times more per fish to be destined as a feeder than just buying a commercially produced one.... Or wild collected one...
