Have some questions about the food for these puffers. I've read all about them and I'm not sure about there diet. What kind of clams? Frozen? Crayfish ok?? Pieces of raw shrimp? And how about tilapia?

When mine was around, at a young age i fed her: Cut up pieces of market prawn, live shrimp / earthworms / pellets /

Then as she grew bigger i mixed her diet between: Frozen Clams with shell / Mussels with shell /frozen Scallops / frozen market prawns /live cray fish / pellets

Thanks a lot for your info! Really helpful!

Sorry to state the obvious, but make sure to defrost the frozen foods before actually feeding it to your puffer ;)

Lol... I know. But thanks for your info. I have 2 stingrays and three wolf fish so I'm used to the different foods. Just the shelled food I wasn't sure about. So they actually eat the clam shells?? Also how long do you leave the clam in there?

I noticed some types of clams had thicker shells than others, so with certain types, i would have them crack them open a little so she could get into them...

Honestly, once she realized it was food, clams never lasted more than about 5min or so, then once she finished eating, i would remove the empty shells from the tank so they dont foul up the water with little bits of food...

when I had a fahaka he would eat half she clams but he would just eat the meat, How do fahakas beaks get trim if they are just eating the meat. I guess the only thing they can eat to trim their beaks would be cray fish. I tried apple snails but he paid them no mind. so I finally gave up and sold him. I do want to try again but if some one can drop some knowledge on me it would be great.

My little guy is a picky eater. Eats snails and crayfish is about all. Still a youngster though. I can't get him to eat clams shrimp or krill (among other things) and he doesn't love earthworms, but if I cut up and mix the earthworms in the snails he will eat them, not so much with anything else. I bought snails in bulk on ebay and froze them, but their shells are waaay too hard for him so I have to crush them with vice grips 1st. At least at 5" his bite doesn't seem to be very strong, larger crayfish he can't break the body but will scoop it out. He does eat everything on smaller crayfish 2-3" and he chews up the broken snail shells so his teeth should be good, but he does require some work - it's worth it though.
