Hello everyone, my longear sunfish have been breeding which is so cool!! Each time they breed I take the eggs and put them into a egg tumbler if I don't the eggs will get eaten by the male, not the brightest fish in the world! Well after several failed attempts I final have a couple eggs that hatched they hatched on Saturday night and it's Monday night now they still have an egg sac but it's getting smaller. So my question is what is the best food to start them off of? I have some nls that I can crush up real fine or can get something else at the lfs. Also I should start feeding when the egg sac is completely gone correct? Thank you so much!!

Yes once the egg sac is absorbed they will need food, pulverize the nls pellets, and hopefully they eat it.

best bet for the first 2-4 weeks is baby brine shrimp, frozen or live, after that switch them to Daphnia and then they should be able to eat crushed flake food by 1.5-2 months old

Ive kept many longears that i take from just one creek in my area, i always start moving them to cichlid pellets immediately, but subsidize that with the occasional earth worm. :)
