Food for thought

What kind of fruit or vegetable can I feed my African Cichlids? I have 2 frontosa's, 4 yellow labs, blood parrot, livingstoni, electric blue. Tell me your experiences with feeding fish other that commercial fish food.

I feed peas, lettuce, and the occasional carrot slices. Boiling them makes them sink and my fish more likely to eat them (do lose a little nutritional value though) Some of my cichlids that really need vegetable matter just refuse to eat any vegetable I give them though so they stuck with vegetable based flakes and pellets.
