+1 to that. A lot of the species kept on here are food fish in their native countries.
Not just tiger perch, but giant catfish (red tail, tiger shovelnose, pangasius, etc) are an excellent example. In fact, the babies we see for sale come from aquaculture farms which are primarily rearing them for food but send some to the aquarium industry every now and again.

Yeah, it's especially funny when you see that the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel distorted, misshapen, stunted and malformed specimens which are culled by the farms...make their way to petstores where fishkeepers compete to see who can find the ugliest most twisted ones, and then pay big bucks for them. :(

With regards to bottom-of-the-barrel genetics, Asian red tail catfish is probably one of the worst cases: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...-mr-crankypants-16.678397/page-3#post-8059118

This is a fish that's supposed to live for several decades, but this farm cull didn't last much longer than 3.

Can't really blame those breeders. Twenty years ago, they would spot an oddball runt or hunchback in the fry tank and do the logical thing, i.e. feed it to the cat. Today, they know somebody will pay big bucks for a short-bodied upside-down-swimming piebald balloon longfin frankenstein fish. They're businessmen; of course they will capitalize on the weirdos; I'm referring to the fish rather than the fishkeepers...but then again...:)
