so basically my gars are in danger being that vthats all they will eat. my pirahna will eat anything (especially my water changing hose) so i will change his diet. also 20 small rosies in a 10gal being fed omega one flakes and being treated with salt and parasite clear. i think that there healthy. i know they are in really bad conditions at the lfs but i dont think 20 per 10gallons is pushing it, do you

About how long are they in the quarantine tank? Should give it atleast 2 weeks to a month in a qt tank before feeding them to your fish.

Goldfish are among the worst thing you can feed see below
reason 1 They are kept in horrible conditions
reason 2 They are often diseased
reason 3 They often are carriers of parasites
During quarantine dispose of the obviously sick or diseased. The remaining ones feed quality
foods a healthy feeder is of course better for your fish.
Goldfish just generaly are poor feeders and should be avoided. they are oily not very nutritious and constant feed of them causes faty deposits on the liver leading to premature deaths. They also contain very high levels of Thiaminase a destroying hormone. While many fish used as feeders contain this goldfish seem to have an abundance of it.Another issue is a spine at the front of the dorsal fin which can lead to problems if the goldfish is swollowed the wrong way (tailfirst).Yet another reason not to use goldfish, goldfish farms utilize copper meds in suspension form to combat diseases in the feeders associated with overcrowding. These copper meds are retained by the feeders for long periods after they leave the farms. Most lfs invariably retain all or part of the feeders shipping water when the feeders are loaded into their bins/tanks. And copper does not dissapate from a closed system.-Anne

Thiaminase in high levels is also found in allot of frozen fish and shellfish.. Mainly in Mussels, clams and Shrimp.. Carp is higfher in thiaminase than the goldfish as that was the fish the study was done on, so kinda depends on the species.. As well as reading about Shell fish they are also noted to be close to or equally abundant.. From what I read the zoo's always use vitamins to counter act this with ALL there food.

So you ideally should use vitamins when feeding almost every frozen food.

All the otehr reasons for not feeding goldfish are more of a reason than thiaminase.

Infact by this .. Shellfish is more dense with thiaminase than anycarp sp..

Thiaminase is a goldfish keepers dream come true as not many worry about the real dangers..: Disease, parasites, fat and other above stated... But when they started throwing out thiaminase it scares people and in my opinion should be the last reason for not feeding Goldfish. There are many oterh reasons to not do it.. But some of us will still do it regardless..

Most info is taken from I believe the Cornell university studies.. Which pretty much state the same.

Just my opinion

Try to stay away from live feeders unless for a rare snack. I had my RBPs eating cichlid pellets... it might take a while, but it's good for them. Mine were looking good and growing nice when they were eating 'em...
