I purchased a small (~6") silver arowana today admittedly on a bit of a whim. The wholesaler was feeding freeze dried krill and I did see the fish eat. As soon as I turned the little guy loose in my 300, it went straight into a corner and continued to be terrified for the rest of the day. I don't see this fish becoming interested in eating anytime soon. I don't suppose this fish will eat a ball of blackworms on the bottom of the tank?

Now, aside from dried krill, what are some foods that aros are particularly fond of? I'd like to get this fish eating pellets eventually, but I want to be sure to put some weight on it first. I'm thinking small feeder goldfish, but I HATE using those.

Feeding my new aro becomes a little tricky when you consider that my tank has overflows with a lot of current (3600gph). I want to avoid all the food sweeping right into my overflows and decomposing in the filter instead of the fish's stomach. This is especially critical as I have small rays and do not want an ammonia spike. Any ideas? Suggestions?

your silver is probably just getting use to the tank so it will be fine that it is hiding (soon it will be a monster in no time).

silver arrowanas are not picky eaters. mine ate everything i threw in there. try gut loaded crickets or floating carnivore sticks/dried shrimp. once they add some size you can include market shirmp with shell on (cut head and tail off first).

congrats on your new arrow

it's just the first day, go easy on the little guy

crickets are usually a sure thing.

Give ours a mixture of foods and he always picks out mussel as soon as it hits the water. He will also eat prawn, cockle and sometimes whitebait.Try tearing pieces of varying sizes .

b/4 my 14" went sky diving it ate:
large cichlid pellets
floating carnivore sticks
crickets
any fish small enough to fit in its mouth
and really anything that floated
just give it time to get adjusted
it will end up eating anything, just keep it varied

My BLACK aro is ver picky and eats almost nothing. I have to actually mince beefheart mix it with crushed tetra-sticks and crushed dried krill, the make small meatballs and place dry krill inside so it floats. Or I cut thing strings of beafheart and tie them around dry krill. That is all this aro ever eats!
There is a convict in her tank. Has been there for a month.
