Food training

That is good to hear he is still picking at it! I use the net ones and they work well I have never used the plastic ones so can't say much on them. Syringe? Did I mention a syringe somewhere? If I did I don't remember sorry.

You didn't... But alot of people recommend using a syringe withe the end off to "inject" food infront of the mandarin to entice it to eat. That way you can control the food flow and place it directly infront of it. Did you use this method or did you just place the food in the net?

I just use a turkey baster an squirt some food into the net and that has worked for me.

Can do, thanks :)

Man...that mandarin diner thing makes me kinda wanna try one... :/ haha

It sounds cool but just isn't a good idea. ORA couldn't get these things to eat prepared let alone pellets. Haven't heard anything more of their aquacultured mandarins that failed miserably.

This has been a very interesting and informative read - thanks!

I'm hopin' someday the pod population is large enuff in my 180 to get a Green Mandarin. Theres most certainly pods now - usually see about 20-40 on the glass daily, lil' white specs. Also best of luck with yours lookin' forward to hearing more.

I heard that they just werent as hardy as advertised. I dont think it is hard to get them onto NLS...every one that has been in a friends tank has taken nls. (two fish total)

One was kept in a sumped 125g, and starved slowly (no scrubber or fuge) over about a six month period. (Also no dosing or addition of pods at any time aside from whatever was on the LR)

Another was kept in a 30g, and was fed NLS and brine. Took both immediately upon addition to the tank. Just wasnt enough, or enough times a day

The only reason I dont already have a red in tank is because I know that these "mandarin feeder" is going to be swamped with other fishes haha

I feel that ORA should have taken a little more time with their first batch and advertised more that they still need to be fed several times a day. But they did have them eating prepared and pellets. And last I heard there will be another batch of the blues coming out in June but I am not sure about the spotteds.

The reds are really pretty... maybe one day when they perfect the art of feeding mandarins i'll get one. Too much hassle otherwise
