I don't know why you are not using the screen. There is no point in removing it.

Actually if you take the screen off and place the end of the hose about 1/4" from the tank floor, you'll get better suctioning ability.

For me it's worth it as my tank is bare bottom and I want to suck up as much as poop from the tank floor as possible. Nothing usually supended mid-water in my tank
