Well, as much as I loved the Dovii, my wife said he had to go. She stays home all day and he's constantly hitting the glass so hard, she can hear the smacks all the way across the house. He hits the lids too and they come crashing back down. She said he's too crazy and was scared to death of 265 gallons of water filling up the house. Well, all in all, the wife comes before the fish so she won out. :(

Had to comment on this. A long time ago I had the Pacu in a 300 gallon tank in my living room. Every once in a while he would startle and dash to the side of the tank, literally creating a wake of water which would spill on the hardwood floor. My wife brought down the hammer and said...gotta go.

In order to move the fish I took the water level down to half and used "hypno" to tranquilize him. He was small at this point...only 24" :D. I wasn't sure how much Hypno to use so I applied the prescribed amount and then watched. He seemed to calm down...then applied a little more. I didn't have a net big enough so I had a small laundry basket. When I put the basket into the ware he just...came alive, turned on his side and started thrashing. All of the tank tops were off and water hit the ceiling, both walls, the drapes...it was a real water park.

Coincidentally at that point, my wife was walking though the living room. She stopped, gave me THE look, walked into the bathroom and brought out a stack of towels. She said, "I'm going to the mall with your credit card. When I come back, this is cleaned up and that is gone." LOL Yes dear.

I like the idea of the Rivulatus. You really don't see many of them in tanks.
You could also go the other direction and get a colony of Neets or even Nicagauguense...or some of the Archocentrus group...Panamensis, Spilurum...nice and mild...colorful.

Good luck bro.

I wouldn't stop myself from getting something because a fish would be considering "common"....I know there's a lot of elitists in the hobby when it comes to stuff like that, but when it comes down to it, it is whatever makes you happy. I'd rather have a 50 dollar fish I love and I'm happy with than a $1000 boting fish that only has something like rarity going for it.

Amen.

Go for it balton777 ... a pair of time honored cichlids might get you out of your funk about your dovii. Better to try than have the tank end up in storage.

Yeah its your fish in your home, whatever makes you happy. All my fish are pretty common, only 2 are kinda rare. But I dont care I like them alot. I enjoy my tank regardless of anyones opinion. I say go for the rivulatus pair, I wish I could keep them.

Dont worry about whether a fish is rare or common, just get fish that you will enjoy keeping and watching.

That sucks about the Dovii Balton. Sounds like he was full of personality. But I also understand that, if he actually broke the tank, you can't have a huge amount of water burst into/onto you're home floors. Hell, even basement floor would suck. Or even worse yet... Him jumping out and not making it. A Dovii in a pond just sounds awesome!

When you get the new fishes, post pix! LOL Good luck too

Thanks everyone for the inspiration.

My 10yr old daughter literally cried her eyes out as I was getting him out and took him away. :(

Mo, thanks for the story, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

How old and how big did the dovii get ?

I had him close to two years I think and he was 14-15".

Here's his last photo I took when I pulled him out to go to his new home.

Looks a bit over 15inches, well you still have that youtube video atleast for memories!

I currently have a 8" F1 Gold Saum i have to sell hes beating up my oscar at the moment. I love my oscar such a character so the Terror has to go.

Trimacs would be a great pair. Ever try Grammodes or Jaguars?

I was thinking about Grammodes too and Rapps has some that I believe are 3 plus inches and thats not a bad size to start with. Sounds like you were very attached to that fish.
