For african cichlid keepers, a question about food..

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed the 2mm NLS pellet. ad the 5lb bucket is VERY sound advice. Can buy a 10oz jar of NLS at the LFS for $25.00 or I can order 5lb bucket from CaliforniaCichlids (who happens to be about a mile from my place) for $80. Savings of ~$120.00 for the same amounts.

The kind in your avatar.

If they are mbuna like the ones in my avatar then they are herbivores / algae grazing fish. You should make sure the food you give gets its protein source mainly derived from plants. Avoid foods high in animal proteins as this is where the risk comes in.

Like others have said a good spirulina flake is a perfect choice, plus a pellet designed for algae eating fish. I have not tried NLS as it is not available locally to me but have had great results from the following foods:

JBL Spirulina - http://www.jbl.de/en/aquatics-freshwater-products/detail/3331/jbl-spirulina
New Era - Green - http://www.new-era-aquaculture.com/fish-food/tropical-range/rift-lake-cichlid-pellets-green
SERA Granugreen - http://www.sera.de/en/pages/products/in_category/food-specialties-264/product/sera-granugreen.html

My fish also like peas, cucumber and the occasional sheet of Nori (seaweed sheets used in Japanese food, it is really cheap)

B :)
