People interested in writing scripts shouldn't go to post secondary school for it, in my opinion. As long as you know the basic cuts, fades, wipes, etc. and writing format, you're better off self taught.
Writing courses stifle creativity; too many does and don'ts.
Just my opinion.

Exactly. I had to write a script for my story telling class and we were extremely limited to what we were allowed to do. I personally do not like restrictions when it comes to stuff like that. I rather have free roam and do what I want.

I wouldn't like that either. Readers/viewers want to see your piece, not a watered down interpretation of your piece because you have limited creative control.

The screenwriter doesn't do cuts, fades, wipes, etc. That's all the editor. Getting the format down isn't really a challenge either, there are programs out there that do that for you. All you need to know in Final Draft is the tab key, lol.

The trick to writing a script is to write images. There are no character thoughts, only what they show externally. That's where a lot of people get hung up in screenwriting. You should pick up some screenplays. They are actually interesting reads. My favorite was "Wall-E."

Personally, I don't find screenwriting restricting. Its sometimes challenging, but not restrictive.

I've read lots of screen plays. My favorite is Magnolia.
I understand the editors job, but you should be writing the cuts, fades, etc. if you want it portrayed on the screen, according to how it was written (your original thoughts).

We were taught not to. Unless you're the director, then it doesn't matter what it looks like. lol. Most screenwriters are trying to break and get a job. The producers don't want a script that presumes to know more than they do. Or that's the way we were taught anyway.

I'm a FullSail film grad ('07). Had a great experience there but I do have some debt lol. Its not really any more expensive than other schools its just all up front rather than spread out over four years.
When writing you will always have limitations whether because its an assignment or because youre limited in what you can create, as in I cant write a script about mountain climbers and expect to do anything with it because I live in Florida. Finding ways to create something you're happy with regardless of limitations will make you a stronger writer.

I agree with this. I like dragons and wizards. Can't produce that stuff right now, lol. So now I gotta think outside the box and write other things. I've got a couple of shorts that are totally produceable and were a lot of fun to write. Another thing that's helped my writing is doing stories in less than 1000 words. I'm kind of a long-winded story teller...lol
