Interesting read...I've got some theories I'd like to get paid to follow up :D .

Typical response. :( The theory has nothing to do with IF there are bacteria that produce oxygen, but rather WHEN the exhisted. Nice try though. :D Maybe you should read it AGAIN. :D

how does this tie in with biofilters ???:confused:

You'd have to ask DrJoe that for now. He's supposed to have all the answers. :grinno: After all, he did say bacteria doesn't produce oxygen. :D

The bacteria use the O2 they do not produce it or you would never be able to get a denitrater to function.

sorry guys i didnt mean to interupt a good debate :popcorn: :popcorn: :popcorn:

Kol, How many genus of cyanobacteria are you aware of? I was amazed that so very few new they are responsible for life as we know it. :D

Well I'm just an electrician so this is far from my expertice. From what I understand;

Aerobic - bacteria that uses oxygen

Anaerobic - bacteria that does not survive in the presence of oxygen

"Cyanobacteria are the only bacteria that produce oxygen as a byproduct of their metabolism." (this is from your article that you posted the link to)

So the way I see it your both right and wrong.

Of course The conversation was on bacteria that breaks down ammonia and nitrites in your filter. That bacteria is Aerobic, so for that conversation Dr. Joe is 100% right and you, well....:lipsseale (to avoid a flame war).

Of course I am just and electrician so I may be way of base with this.

It's good that you do not want to debate is300zx because you are wrong. No debate about that.

The way detrious is broken down in the filter is by the bacteria. What takes weeks is the bacterial growth to match the amount of 'food' available.

The bacteria use the O2 they do not produce it or you would never be able to get a denitrater to function.

It would be interesting to know what bacteria you are looking at with the microscope.

Please do a search in this forum on these topics, there is alot of good info here.
