? for sponge-filter users

i have the penguin 660r sponge filter, but it's not trapping any debri. It just blows water from the other end of the filter.... how do i fix this?

could it be that i used a rubberband instead of an adapter?

this site tells the parts of the filter... i am missing the adapter that comes on top of the core, i used a rubber band to make the two pieces connect.... did this cause the problem? should i go back and get the adapter?

I'll bet your not getting water drawn up through the whole sponge and thats why it floats...... sounds like a trip to the store.
