So all you guys that have custom indoor ponds, built in 1000+ gallon tanks. What do you do for water change and how often do you do them? I'm looking at doing a in wall build for my rays and piggy that system's filtration and water on a 12'x30"x24" piranha tank. I was just wondering what to do and how you guys do tank maintenance. Since there is so much more water do you not have to do changes as often, are they more self sustaining then a regular in home tank? Any info you guys have as to how you take care of your set up, how often things need done and some things to look out for before I dive into this.

There is so much water in that thing that you can probably go with topping off once a week and doing a water change once a month. That's how I do it with my 330g system and the parameters are always perfect. However, you also have to take into mind how heavily you stock it and how good the filtration is. Plants help a lot with filtration. I use a python for my water changes.

A system, no matter how big or small, is as good as its weakest link. So if your filtration is very good, less water-changes might be necessary...But sure that's only one small part of it.
More fish, more load, more water changes.

Electrical cost to run a large system was my biggest surprise. Not sure what turnover you are looking for, but for a 1,000G system if you want high turnover you are going to need a really big pump. Really big pumps are expensive to run. The cost to heat that much water is also really expensive.

I change my water once a month on my 15,000 gal. tank. That around 5,000 gal. Glad I have well water.I always run 115 volts on my pump.It runs warm and it keeps the water at 80 f. no need for a heater.

A constant water drip or flow into the tank and out of the tank would be best in my opinion as that way it will do the water change automatically for you. One less thing to worry about and also you would always have the best water in the setup. It would always be constantly the same vs changing a larger amount.

Electrical BILL IS ABOUT 100 FOR MY 8 TANKS. WATER BILL IS ULGY ALSO. I THINK IT'S HIGH COMEING IN AND HIGHER GOING OUT WITCH THEY SHOULD NOT EVEN CHARGE ME FOR I DRAIN IN TO MY YARD.

I NEED A WELL OR SPRING. AND A WINDMILL AND SOLAR PANELS. LOL
IF I COULD ONLY MAKE THEM MY SELF.
