For the Love of Pacu

well... 600 is the least you wanna go if you have tankmates that won't be eaten...

Tank mates right now are an oscar, a common pleco and the odd ball gourami.

The gourami can go into any tank in my house. I can't see the pacu eating either the oscar or the pleco.

I also have in the tank about 2 dozen guppies. I have a guppy breeder going to make me live food for the oscar, but he doesn't seem to eat them. I add 6 or 8 guppies each week and the sheer quantity of guppies in that tank just keeps climbing. There are a LOT of floating plants in there, and I suspect the guppies are going to start breeding in the pacu tank. The gourami should solve that problem for me, I hope.

Ohh wait, there is also a tiger loach hiding in the rocks. I forget he is there as I don't see him too often. I doubt the pacu could catch him.

it is possible... I lost my little new catfish to one of my once living pacus...

you'll probably want a 1000 gallon tank or more for the future... good luck on your build!!!

Red bellies only grow to around 2'. IMO a 1000g tank for 4' of fish is a little excess.:nilly: A 400g would give them more than enough room.

with space and big and colorful tankmates, the best is a 1000 plus, but 600 is the least you would wanna go... unless there aren't many fish...

~Ocean I have said about 4 times how many fish there are.

2 red bellied pacu
1 oscar
1 pleco
1 golden gourami

I have 3 of these guys, and one's already up to 22 inches. He was the one I rescued from a 55 gallon! I have a feeling they're gonna keep growing. I have mine in about a thousand gallons, but then, I also have an RTC. 600 gallons, with the right footprint, would make your life easier (less maintenance) and you'll get the chance to watch them act normally, instead of having to sit still. I didn't realize how fast these fish were until I started taking them in. I'd only ever seen them sitting still in tiny tanks. They're unbelievably fast. It's so fun to watch them swim back and forth. I think that if you provide a larger space for them, you'll enjoy so much of their behavior that others miss out on.

Edit: Here's a link to some photos I posted of my guys having their dinner. YUM!
