American Eels live in pretty much every river system in the northeast. They're spawned at sea, find a river, and swim up as far as they can get. So I'd have to say they can adapt to almost any water quality. I've found eels in some of the dirtiest, shallowest, stinky waters New Jersey(the greatest place in th world to live) has to offer. Infact Dead River where I grew up only has three inhabitants, water snakes, carp, and eels. And the eels do a lot better than the carp.

Just note they can get as big as 5 foot depending on sex, they eat fish, and they can get out of almost any tank.
