I admit I overlooked the mention of a timer but I'm now wondering if you really need to have your lights on for that amount of time,are there no windows in the room that the tank is in?

yes there is a patio window right near the tank, but not much light comes in that way really not even when door is open and sunny outside.... the light really makes everything nice and bright to see everything in the tank from the living room (open concept)
